A Tampa man was arrested Wednesday on Alligator Alley after authorities said he had 9.5 pounds of marijuana in his sport utility vehicle.
Jose Caballero, 34, of 6009 Murray Hill Drive, was taken into custody on westbound Interstate 75 at Mile Marker 99, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to a sheriff’s office report, a deputy said he stopped Caballero’s black Honda Passport for having illegally tinted windows. After approaching the vehicle, the deputy smelled marijauna coming from the Honda.
After another deputy arrived, a search of the SUV revealed two garbage bags containing a total of nine heat-sealed bags filled with marijuana, the report said.
During the traffic stop, Caballero appeared nervous, with heavy breathing, profuse sweating and a pulsing carotid artery, the report said.
Caballero told the deputies “he was sorry” and that he did not do drugs, the report said.
The total weight of the marijuana was about 9.5 pounds with a value of $28,500, the report said.
Caballero was charged with possession of marijuana of more than 20 grams, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was taken to the county jail in Naples with bail set at $11,000.
