A third-grader brought a loaded gun to a Sarasota elementary school on Wednesday, keeping the pistol in his backpack until another student alerted a teacher.
The incident happened at Brentwood Elementary, a school of about 610 students, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said the student took the .22-caliber pistol from the home of his mother’s friend. The boy showed the weapon to two other boys at school.
One of the students told school officials, who confiscated the gun.
The sheriff’s office and the Department of Children & Families are investigating.
Bringing a weapon to school is considered a level three incident on a scale of four and is punished with an out-of-school suspension or possible expulsion, according to the student handbook.
