A high school teacher died Thursday afternoon in Lake Alfred when a driver ran a red light and crashed into the side of her car, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

Shirelle Baldwin, 44, of Lakeland died at the scene of the 4:45 p.m. crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 92 and U.S. Highway 17. Baldwin was a teacher at New Beginnings High School in Winter Haven, the sheriff’s office said.

A passenger in her Toyota Camry, Taniea Baldwin, 18, was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Although they have the same last name, they are not related, the sheriff’s office said. Taniea Bladwin is a student at New Beginnings High School in Winter Haven.

Minutes before the crash, Shirelle Baldwin was driving north on U.S. Highway 17. When she reached U.S. Highway 92, she had a green light, entered the left turn lane and pulled into the intersection to head west on U.S. Highway 92, the sheriff’s office said.

As Baldwin waited to turn left, a Dodge Dakota pickup truck driven by Christopher Fuqua, 22, of Winter Haven was in the inside lane heading east on U.S. Highway 92, the sheriff’s office said.

Witness told investigators that Fuqua ran a red light and crashed into the driver’s side of Shirelle Baldwin’s car, the sheriff’s office said.

Fuqua, who was alone in his pickup truck, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

It doesn’t appear that he was impaired. Charges against Fuqua are pending, the sheriff’s office said.

At the time of the crash, it appears everyone involved was wearing their seat belt, the sheriff’s office said.

The intersection of U.S. Highway 92 and U.S. Highway 17 was closed until 9 p.m.
