A 28-year-old Ocala mother left her crying infant in the car for more than 15 minutes while she was inside an ABC liquor store Wednesday night, sheriff’s deputies said.
Bethany Douglas was uncooperative with two off-duty deputies who heard the 4-month-old girl crying about 8:30 p.m. and waited in the parking lot until the mother came out of the store, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputies said they waited 16 minutes, and it was not known how long they child was left unattended before they arrived.
When confronted by a deputy, Douglas said, “You can’t do anything, you’re off duty,” according to a sheriff’s office news release.
Douglas was arrested on a charge of child neglect. She was booked at the Marion County Jail with bail set at $2,000, according to the sheriff’s office.
Douglas told one of the deputies she left her daughter in the vehicle because she didn’t want to bring her into the liquor store and felt it was OK because the weather was comfortable, the news release said.
The baby was placed in the custody of the state Department of Children & Families.
