Clearwater police: Michigan man had sex with 16-year-old boy

A 27-year-old Michigan man, who told police he was here for a foster children conference, is charged with having sex with a 16-year-old boy.

Robert Lee Hilla, of 100 East Gary St., Bay City, was arrested Tuesday and charged with unlawful sexual activity with a minor. He is being held in the Pinellas County Jail on $10,000 bond.

Hilla, who said he was in town to speak at a conference about foster children, is accused of having sex with the teen at the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort and Spa, 301 S. Gulfview Blvd., police said.

The teen and Hilla exchanged several texts and photos before arranging a meeting after they got in touch via a Craigslist ad placed by a friend of the teen, police said. Hilla flew into the area on Monday.

The victim told police he informed Hilla that he was only 16, but that Hilla said it was no problem, according to investigators. Hilla told police that the teenager said he was 17, which he said is the age of consent in Michigan.
