Clearwater man fires at electrical worker, deputies say

Published:

A power company employee was shot at this afternoon while turning off electricity at a Clearwater apartment, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

About 1 p.m., a Duke Energy employee shut off electrical service at 15390 Verona Ave., Apt. B, for non-payment, deputies said. While finishing up paperwork in his work vehicle, the employee was approached by Corey Deshaun Richardson, 21, who lives in the apartment, according to a report.

Richardson began to argue about the power being cut off, and the employee noticed the shirtless man had a handgun tucked in his pants waistband, deputies said. Fearing for his safety, the employee drove off, and he saw Richardson in the rearview mirror pull the gun from his pants and fire at the vehicle, deputies said.

The employee called deputies, who arrived and took Richardson into custody. Deputies found a bullet hole in the driver’s side rear taillight and recovered the bullet, according to the report.

During questioning, Richardson admitted to the shooting, deputies said. He has been charged with attempted murder.
