A Clearwater man has been charged with aggravated child abuse after police say he caused his 3-month-old child to suffer a skull fracture and two broken ribs, and did not seek medical treatment.

Joseph Bentley, 32, is being held without bond at the Pinellas County Jail.

Police say Bentley admitted to forcefully picking the child on three separate occasions earlier this month, squeezing him in the rib area before slamming him into his own shoulder.

The injuries did not come to light until the victim’s grandmother — Bentley’s mother — took the child to a previously scheduled pediatric appointment, police say.

At that appointment, doctors noticed the child’s head was swollen.

The child remains hospitalized at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, police say.
