An 18-year-old man has been arrested in the slaying of a Clearwater woman whose body was found Saturday in a ditch near the Pinellas Trail.

Dewayne Xavier Jones, of Clearwater, faces a charge of first-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Lydia Ann Tross.

Robbery is the apparent motive, Clearwater police said. One of Jones’ relatives found property belonging to Tross in Jones’ possession, police said. The family member notified authorities.

Tross had been reported missing from home Aug. 5, police said. Her body was found by a passer-by Saturday afternoon in a grassy ditch west of the Pinellas Trail, north of Fairmont Street.

Jones, of 1914 N. Betty Lane, was being held without bail at the Pinellas County Jail.

On July 19, Jones was arrested by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office on charges of possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and obstructing or resisting an officer without violence. He was released on bond two days later, authorities said.

Detectives are still asking for the public’s help in the case. Anyone with information should call police at (813) 562-4242 or email tips@myclearwater.com.
