Dumpster-dive for yard art
Repurposing household throwaways to serve a higher calling as yard art may be its own reward, but the payoff just got bigger.
The second Recycled Yard Art Contest will award two $100 prizes (first place and People's Choice), a $75 second place and $50 for third to winning art designed with mostly reused or recycled materials. The art must be two- or three-dimensional and able to withstand the elements.
Last year's first-place winner was Don Hardy, who crafted a small ship out of glass from blue bottles and copper. People's Choice went to Bob Dickey for a metal duck created from shovels.
The contest is open to Hillsborough County residents of all ages and will be held during the Hillsborough County Fair, Nov. 4 through 8. It's sponsored by the county Extension Service and Waste Management department.
To be sure your entry meets all requirements, including content and safety standards, you can e-mail it by Wednesday to Watsonb@hillsboroughcounty.org or fax to (813) 744-5776. Include your name, date, address, phone number, e-mail, entry description and reused/recycled materials.
Deliver your entry to the county fairgrounds at State Road 60 and Sydney Washer Road in Dover from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 1 or Nov. 2. Be sure to include the aforementioned information. If you didn't send a photo first, your entry might be rejected for failure to meet requirements.
