A 19-year-old classmate has been arrested in the shooting death of a high school student found on the Chain of Lakes Trail last month, Winter Haven police said.
Antonio Donte Callaway, of 101 Park Drive, Winter Haven, was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, police said.
Callaway and an unnamed accomplice lured Alicia Dorene Barnett, 18, of Poinciana, to Carefree Cove on Nov. 12 by telling her they wanted to make a drug deal, but they intended to take her marijuana, police said. During the armed robbery, she was shot multiple times, police said.
Text messages made in the area and witness identifications led police to Callaway, who was arrested at home later that day on warrants from Polk County, police said.
A witness had just passed the area riding his bicycle on the Chain of Lakes Trail en route to work when he heard what he thought were four gunshots, police said. Later, after hearing what happened, he called police and was able to give a general description of two men in the area of the shooting.
Barnett and Callaway both attended New Beginnings High School, less than a half-mile from the shooting scene. Police, while responding to another call, found Barnett's body in a wooded area in front of the Carefree Cove neighborhood.
People who knew Barnett at the school praised her.
"She was an amazing young lady," said Ashlee Wright, principal of New Beginnings, a charter school for at-risk students. "Not only did she have a positive attitude and not only was she excited about getting her life together, she was also a joy just to be around her."
A $5,000 reward is available that leads leading to the arrest of the accomplice. Anyone with information was asked to call Winter Haven police at (863) 401-2256 or Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477).
