Consumers who get text alerts from TBO.com for breaking news, sports, weather and entertainment will need to confirm their subscriptions due to changes in federal consumer law.
This is an example of one of the “re-opt” messages recipients will get from TBO:
TBO.com: IMPORTANT-to keep receiving News alerts from TBO reply Y or subscription will end. No purchase needed up to 5 msgs/day. Msg&data rates may apply. Txt STOP to end, HELP for info, T&Cs: http://tbo.com/tnc
Subscribers will need to “re-opt” to each individual message to continue receiving those alerts. They will have 24 hours to reply.
The Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which was written to protect consumers from telemarketers, has a new provision taking effect Wednesday that requires SMS (Short Message Service) programs to obtain “express written consent” from consumers before sending a text message.
The law requires consumers who sign up for text messages to acknowledge two things:
* Text messages come from an automated system.
* Consent is not required to purchase goods and services.
Nothing else changes with the text alert messages from TBO.com. They will still be free. The only cost would be from your service provider.
