TAMPA -

The Tampa Port Authority board on Tuesday is scheduled to consider a raise for Port of Tampa director Richard Wainio from $251,118 to $268,500, port counsel Charles Klug said.

The proposed raise and Wainio's contract will be discussed at the regularly scheduled November port authority board meeting.

Wainio was under fire from some port tenants two months ago, but the authority board in September voted to negotiate a new two-year contract for the director.

Tampa's port provided the following examples of director's salaries at other ports in 2010 and 2011: Houston, $359,300; Georgia (Savannah) $320,000; Jacksonville, $320,000; South Carolina (Charleston) $300,000; Miami, $262,351; Baltimore, $252,136.; and Gulfport, Miss., $240,750.

Those salaries do not include benefits and performance bonuses, such as the port director in Corpus Christi, Texas, whose salary is $310,003 and received $100,000 in bonuses last year, a Tampa port authority memo said.
