Kohl’s negotiating to open at Dale Mabry, Columbus

TAMPA — For anyone living in central Tampa, the nearest Kohl’s department store is about 15 miles away in Brandon. That could soon change.

A major national retailer, Kohl’s is negotiating to take over a site at the southeast corner of North Dale Mabry Highway and West Columbus Drive. A Kmart store operates there now, and local developers have growing interest in redeveloping such locations as Kmart struggles in the marketplace.

“That’s one of the last remaining Kmarts operating in Tampa Bay,” Patrick Berman, a commercial real estate broker with Cushman & Wakefield, said at a Wednesday gathering of the Westshore Alliance business group to hear updates on new projects for hotels, retailers, apartments and office spaces. “Kohl’s may deny it, but they’re negotiating for that site.”

There’s no guarantee a deal will come to fruition, and Berman cautioned that talks of some sort have been going on for several months.

“At this time, we have not announced any plans to open a new store in your community,” Kohl’s spokeswoman Lyra O’Brien wrote in an email. “Kohl’s has an ongoing real estate assessment process. At any given time, Kohl’s is reviewing sites in communities nationwide. We do not comment on real estate speculation.”

Nevertheless, the Westshore Alliance meeting has a record of breaking news as it gathers major real estate players in the Tampa region. The last big bombshell of development news was the location of a new Trader Joe’s grocery store in South Tampa – a passing mention that proved accurate.
