GAINESVILLE -

Consumer confidence is rebounding in Florida.

A University of Florida survey released today shows Floridians' confidence was up by three points in May to 77. That's also nine points higher than a year ago on a consumer confidence scale of 2 to 150.

The growing confidence reversed a three-month decline.

Chris McCarty, director of the university's Survey Research Center, said confidence was particularly strong among those under 60 and people with household incomes of more than $30,000.

McCarty, though, found the sudden rise strange because several pressing federal economic issues could result in tougher times ahead. They include the impending expiration of tax cuts unless Congress votes to restore them as well as spending cuts.

One the positive side, though, gasoline prices dropped 33 cents over the past month.
