In an announcement the company plans to make today, the store will feature an opening party, complete with Under Armour T-shirt giveaways and a 4,000-gallon “Dick's Bass Tank” to try fishing. On Saturday and Sunday, “Addictive Fishing” host Blair Wiggins will make a special appearance in store from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Dick's Sporting Goods is excited to bring another store to the Tampa community with the opening of our newest location,” Lauren Hobart, senior vice president & chief marketing officer of Dick's said in remarks prepared for Monday's announcement. “We look forward to continuing to serve the athletes and outdoor enthusiasts in Tampa and inspiring them to achieve their personal best.”
The new location will be the retailer's 27th store in Florida and its 564th nationwide, and will be a flagship store, stretching two levels and 80,000 square feet, roughly the size of a Publix store — all in the space once occupied by Saks Fifth Avenue that closed down last year.
Dick's new opening comes as a string of sporting goods stores are either entering the Tampa market, or adding new locations. Gander Mountain opened a location just west of Tampa, and Bass Pro Shops plans a massive location in Brandon, likely with fishing pond and museum-sized aquariums. Meanwhile, other stores are scouting sites in Florida, including REI, Cabella's and Academy Sports + Outdoors.
