Florida's three-day sales tax holiday begins today as shoppers head to stores to take advantage of the annual back-to-school discount.
The period, which ends at midnight Sunday, waives the 6 percent state sales tax on many items.
There is also no county sales tax. In Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Polk counties, that's another 1 percent.
Tax-free items include clothing, wallets, backpacks and shoes that cost less than $75 and classroom supplies (pens, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) that cost less than $15.
Many sporting goods are not tax-free, such as football pads or soccer shin guards.
The back-to-school season normally counts as the second-busiest of the year for retailers, behind the winter holidays.
