Fla. disaster expert to help with Hawaii storms

Published:

TALLAHASSEE — Florida emergency officials have dispatched one of their top leaders to Hawaii as the state responds to twin Hurricanes Iselle and Julio.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management is acting upon a request for assistance from the Hawaiian officials as the state responds to twin Hurricanes Iselle and Julio. Deputy Operations Chief Ashley Davis left Friday. She’ll coordinate emergency management missions to assist storm survivors.

Hurricane Iselle weakened to a tropical storm and made landfall at 2:30 a.m. Hawaiian Standard Time on Friday. Current models indicate that Hurricane Julio will pass north of the state Sunday as a category 1 storm.

Hawaii last experienced a land-falling hurricane in 1992 when Hurricane Iniki struck Kauai. Florida gained multiple-storm experience during the 2004-2005 hurricane season.
