A man asleep on a bench in Williams Park woke up to find someone going through his pockets.
After being assaulted, Willie Arline, 60, stabbed the would-be robber, St. Petersburg Police said.
Arline first told Arnold Perry, 52, to get away from him, police said. Instead, police said, Perry punched Arline, knocking him to the ground. Police said Perry continued assaulting Arline until the latter produced the knife.
Officers received a call around 12:45 a.m. about the stabbing at 350 2nd Avenue North.
Witnesses corroborated Arline’s statement that was defending himself, police said.
Perry was transported to Bayfront Health and taken to surgery but his wound is no longer thought to be life-threatening, police said. He will be charged with attempted strong arm robbery when he recovers, police said.
