A Sarasota County woman has been charged with cruelty to animals after deputies say she killed her dog after a veterinarian refused to euthanize, deeming it healthy.

According to deputies, Venice police contacted Sarasota County Animal Services in November after receiving a report Shelley Bezanson, 28, of Osprey, killed her 7-year-old dog, Diamond, and planned to bury it at a home on Base Avenue in Venice.

Deputies say Bezanson attempted to have the dog euthanized, but her veterinarian refused, saying the dog was not sick and there was no ethical reason to do so.

After the veterinarian’s staff urged her to return the dog to the Humane Society of Sarasota County, deputies say she chose to kill the dog herself.

A necropsy shows the dog was strangled, deputies say.

Bezanson was arrested Friday and is being held on $25,000 bond.
