A woman faces a DUI charge after her vehicle struck a stopped Florida Highway Patrol cruiser and injuring a trooper in downtown Tampa early Friday, the patrol said.
Sgt. Brenda Simmons, 47, was parked in a construction zone in an unmarked patrol car on the westbound Interstate 4 exit ramp to northbound Interstate 275, troopers said. Her emergency lights were activated as part of a traffic control operation related to the construction, the patrol said.
About 2:50 a.m., the cruiser was rear-ended by a westbound Chevrolet Malibu driven by 29-year-old Nedra Shical Deardra Miller, of Tampa, the patrol said.
Simmons, of Tampa, was transported to Tampa General Hospital with minor injuries, the patrol said.
Miller was not injured but was charged with driving under the influence, the patrol said.
The exit ramp was reopened at 4:30 a.m. following an investigation, the highway patrol said.
