Tampa mom accused in son’s death turns herself in

A Tampa woman accused in the death of her 2-year-old son turned herself in to police this afternoon.

Quanyisha Thompson, 24, of 3809 Jackson Court, was slated to be booked at Hillsborough County Jail on murder and aggravated child abuse charges, Tampa police said.

Police had issued a warrant for Thompson’s arrest earlier in the day.

Police said the “swift arrest was a result of the tremendous amount of social media coverage that the case received via Facebook and Twitter.”

On Oct. 1, authorities responded to Thompson’s address after receiving a report of a child not breathing. Her son, Joshua Worthy, was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he pronounced dead.

Police said Thompson admitted later that week to punching her son in the stomach four days prior to his death, a claim that was confirmed by an autopsy. Detectives were able to issue a warrant after receiving the autopsy results.
