Some Hillsborough voters confused why they can't vote in D-13 race

TAMPA — Hillsborough County elections officials are getting a stream of calls from voters today asking why their precincts are closed and how they can cast their ballots in U.S. House District 13 race.

The answer is simple: They can't.

Hillsborough County is not part of District 13. The election to fill the seat of Rep. C.W. Bill Young, who died in October, is for Pinellas County voters only.

Still, Hillsborough residents have sat through countless TV ads produced by the Republican candidate David Jolly and Democratic hopeful Alex Sink over the past few months. Libertarian Lucas Overby also is running.

Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections administrative assistant Terri Gardiner said workers in the office “have gotten a steady stream of calls” from voters wondering when they can vote in that race, or why their precincts were closed.

Gardiner said voters who call get the explanation that this race is not theirs to decide.

“Some of the callers just don't seem to understand what's going on,” she said.
