River Ridge student injured as bike rides into path of pickup

NEW PORT RICHEY — A River Ridge Middle School student was seriously injured this afternoon when he rode his bicycle into the path of a pickup just down the street from the school, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Gavyn Isaac Burga, 13, was flown to St. Joseph’s Hospital, FHP reported. His injuries were not life threatening, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The student, who was not wearing a helmet, was riding his bicycle west on Town Center Road when he traveled through a red traffic signal and turned left onto Decubellis Road into the path of a Dodge Ram driven by Chester Sapino III, 52, of Holiday, FHP reported.

River Ridge Middle, which is on Town Center Road, dismisses at 1:55 p.m. and the accident was called in to emergency officials at 2:23 p.m., FHP reported.
