Polk County deputies are seeking the public’s help in locating a hit-and-run driver who killed a pedestrian in Lakeland on Thursday night.

Deputies say a man, wearing a reflective vest and pushing a wheelchair, was crossing the southbound lanes of South Florida Avenue from east to west near the entrance to Outback restaurant, 5255 S. Florida Ave., around 9:40 p.m. when he was struck by a southbound driver.

The man, who was not in the crosswalk, died at the scene, deputies say.

Witnesses told deputies said the driver appeared to be speeding at the time of the crash.

The driver struck the victim on the passenger side, throwing the victim and the wheelchair several hundred feet after impact before slowing down and leaving the area, deputies say.

Deputies describe the car as a red, four-door Honda or Acura.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at (863) 287-5552, or (863) 298-6200.
