A riot by residents of a juvenile correction facility in Highlands County late Saturday night is under control

A Polk County Sheriff's Office SWAT team and other agencies responded to the Avon Park Youth Academy, 242 South Park Blvd., after deputies responded to calls around 8:40 about a riot within the facility.

About two hours later, deputies say the juveniles began to surrender to authorities.

All of the residents had been accounted for as of early Sunday morning, according to the academy staff.

Around 5 or 6 residents were treated at local hospitals for minor injuries, and no staff members were injured, deputies say.

During the riot, deputies say a fire was set in a dumpster, but it was put out.

The cause of the riot, and the residents who participated, are under investigation.
