Hillsborough deputy involved in shooting near USF

A man is in critical condition from gunshot wounds sustained when he was shot by a deputy this morning after he threatened the deputy with a gun.

Hillsborough County deputies say the shooting occurred around 6:30 a.m. after Deputy James Woods, 44, a 16-year veteran, responded to a domestic dispute in an Oakbend Apartments unit at 1538 University Woods Place.

Deputies say a female victim was in the apartment with a girlfriend when she heard her boyfriend, Carlos Rivera-Rodriguez, charging a weapon, readying it to shoot, in another room.

The woman called authorities, and the dispatcher alerted Woods that Rivera-Rodriguez was armed, deputies say.

When Woods arrived, Rivera-Rodriguez was outside the apartment with the weapon.

Rivera-Rodriguez was ordered to drop the gun after he charged the weapon in a threat to shoot Woods.

After failing to drop the gun on several requests, deputies say Woods shot Rivera-Rodriguez several times.

Rivera-Rodriguez, 27, whose last known address was 811 East Grove Ave., Tampa, is undergoing surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital and listed in critical condition, deputies say, adding he has a criminal history.

Woods was not hurt, deputies say.

Woods, assigned to the Homeland Security Division, has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending administrative review.
