Hazmat crews on scene of small explosion at USF

Tampa Fire Rescue crews responded to a small explosion on the University of South Florida campus in Tampa this morning after a refrigerator door blew off in a chemical lab.

Fire officials say the small Hazmat incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. at the USF Resarch and Innovation building, 3802 Spectrum Blvd.

Crews responding to an automatic fire alarm at the building — which contains mainly offices — found a refrigerator door had blown off, hitting the inner pane of a double-paned window.

Crews cleared and vented the building, and no hazardous chemicals were spilled and none were found inside the refrigerator, officials say.

Fire officials say the building will remain closed while the investigation continues and USF officials determine it is clear for re-entry.

No injuries were reported, officials say.
