Hillsborough County firefighters safely rescued a man who fell inside a ship at the Port of Tampa this morning.

Officials responded just after 8 a.m. to 4801 Port Sutton Rd. after receiving a call that a man — who has yet to be identified — had fallen down a flight of stairs and 50-60 feet inside the engine compartment of the ship.

Paramedics were with the man during the rescue, to evaluate his condition and treat him in advance of the rescue, officials say.

Crews then set up a hauling system to extricate the man, and they safely removed him in about two hours, officials say.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he is listed in fair condition, officials say.
