A dog was killed in a fire at an unoccupied home in Tampa Heights late Thursday night.

Just before midnight, firefighters responding to the fire at the 3600 block of North Dartmouth Avenue found heavy fire and smoke coming from the back of the house.

While fighting the blaze, firefighters found the house unoccupied but removed a dog that eventually died, according to Tampa Fire rescue.

It took firefighters 20 minutes to get the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
