An 86-year-old Lakeland woman is recovering from a bullet wound she received in an exchange of gunfire that left her son dead Friday night, the Polk County Sheriff’s Department reported.

After hearing multiple gunshots, deputies responded to 1610 Reynolds Road, Lot No. 40, in Lakeland at about 10:25 p.m. There they found Nancy Pennybacker yelling for help as she exited her home.

Pennybaker told deputies she had shot her son, 64-year-old William Pennybaker, in self defense, sheriff’s deputies said. William Pennybaker was found dead inside the home.

Deputies say William Pennybaker had been drinking before becoming angry with his mother and punching her in the face. At some point, the mother and son started shooting at each other.

William Pennybaker was shot and killed. Nancy Pennybaker was shot once, the bullet going through her finger and into her right shoulder.

William Pennybaker had a history of domestic violence arrests involving his mother. In 2011 he was arrested on charges of battery on a person 65 or older. In 2012 he was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

Nancy Pennybaker told detectives her son was depressed and had threatened to harm himself in the past.

She was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center and is in stable condition, deputies said.

Sheriff’s officials said they did not expect to file charges in the case.
