A Polk City man was killed and a mother and daughter were injured during a traffic crash in Polk City, deputies said.

Sheena Star, 28, of Lakeland, and her 5-year-old daughter, Shemir, had to be cut from their GMC Yukon SUV by emergency responders after the crash, deputies said.

Star, who deputies said was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Shemir, who was strapped into a child seat, was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando with serious injuries.

A man who was driving a red, 2009 Ford Mustang died at the scene. Authorities have not released the man’s identity.

The crash happened about 3 p.m. on State Road 33 North near Grimes road in Polk City.

Star was driving the SUV north when she was forced to swerve into the path of the southbound Mustang to avoid hitting a car that had stopped suddenly in front of her, deputies said.

The investigation is ongoing.
