The Right Stuff

A politics blog by Tom Jackson

Tom Jackson's baseball card - if he had one - would report he throws left, writes right. In his columns and blog, "The Right Stuff," southpaw Jackson provides insight into the evolving human condition from a distinctly conservative point of view.

Even Pelosi can’t resist orbit of Planet Hillary

Reversing rumored course, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has at last named five Democrats to the Nothing-to-See-Here Select Committee investigating Benghazi, and the reason is fascinating, to say the least. According to Politico:

Hillary Clinton’s world was so worried about a Republican investigation of the Benghazi attacks, they sent a message to House Democrats: We need backup.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) publicly considered boycotting the panel, an idea that Clinton supporters feared would leave the potential 2016 candidate exposed to the enemy fire of House Republicans.

So Clinton emissaries launched a back channel campaign, contacting several House Democratic lawmakers and aides to say they’d prefer Democrats participate, according to sources familiar with the conversations.

Pelosi’s staff says it’s just not so, but Politico’s sources on Planet Hillary are unequivocal: They say they moved Pelosi to act, otherwise the political future of the former Secretary of State, on whose watch every aspect of the Benghazi catastrophe went down, could be pummeled.

“Republicans are making it clear they plan to use the power of the Benghazi Select Committee to continue to politicize the tragedy that occurred in Benghazi, which is exactly why Democratic participation in the committee is vital,” a Democrat close to Clinton world said. “Inevitably, witnesses ranging from Secretary Clinton to Secretary [John] Kerry will be subpoenaed to testify, and the Democrats appointed to the committee will help restore a level of sanity to the hearings, which would otherwise exist solely as a political witch hunt.”

Lost in the anonymous source’s observation is trust in the American public to identify and dismiss political witch hunts when they see them. Pelosi, it seems, was willing to take that gamble by withholding Democratic membership. But that’s not how the Clintons, legendary for their war-room, fight-everything to the last dog, operate.

Now the investigation will have at least the sheen of bipartisanship, guaranteeing the validity of the eventual findings.

We shall see whether Planet Hillary, even now studying a second run for the White House, comes to regret its meddling.
