With a November election coming up, the Florida House of Representatives will compress the time it meets in committee before the yearly legislative session.
Speaker-designate Steve Crisafulli, R-Merritt Island, on Friday released a 2015 schedule in which his chamber’s committees meet on five different weeks and not until after the new year.
For last session, legislative committees met on nine different weeks, starting as early as the week of last Sept. 23, records show.
Every seat in the House is up for election this year and half the Senate is in play. Term limits hold Florida senators and representatives to eight years in office.
The Florida Senate has not yet released its meeting schedule. A Senate spokeswoman was out of the office Friday.
The House’s new schedule shows that an organizational session is set for this Nov. 18 – two weeks after Election Day.
After that, its committees won’t meet until 2015, during the weeks of Jan. 5, Jan. 20 (beginning the Tuesday after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday), Feb. 2, Feb. 9 and Feb. 16.
The 2015 legislative session will convene on March 3.
UPDATE: The Senate released its schedule later on Friday; it’s the same as the House’s.
