Arrest made in downtown Tampa assault, attempted rape

Police on Thursday night charged a homeless sex offender with attacking a 63-year-old woman in a downtown parking garage earlier in the day, shoving her into a stairwell and molesting her.

Charged with attempted rape, kidnapping, failure to register as a sexual offender and other charges was Glen Mayfield, 57, whose criminal record stretches back to 1978, police said.

The 11:30 a.m. attack occurred as the woman walked to an elevator on the ninth floor of the Fort Brooke parking garage on North Franklin Street, police said.

The man pushed the woman to the floor, punched her several times and fondled her. He left when the woman began screaming loudly.

The attack sparked a large-scale downtown manhunt. Officers were provided with surveillance photos of the man taken from cameras in the garage and around downtown. It wasn't long before they saw Mayfield, who matched the description of the attacker, on a park bench in Lykes Gaslight Park, adjacent to Tampa police headquarters.

He was taken into custody without incident, though he has been uncooperative with detectives, police said.

Police say Mayfield is wanted on a warrant from Georgetown, Del., issued in May charging him with failing to register as a sex offender. Police said he has a criminal history that includes rape, kidnapping, sodomy and other offenses dating back 34 years.

Mayfield recently arrived in Tampa and has been living on the streets, police said.
