PLANT CITY The long-anticipated reopening of Mendonsa Road is expected in the next few days, city officials say.
The nearly $1.3 million project is months behind schedule due to such factors as rain and unexpected troubles relocating utility lines.
City Engineer Brett Gocka expects the road to reopen by next week.
Mendonsa would have already reopened except for such concerns as manhole covers that jut a little too high off the pavement, the city engineer said.
"It's really a ride quality issue," Gocka said.
The city talked for years about rebuilding Mendonsa, and the actual construction started in early 2012. Among other work, the contractor, Marlon Dunn Contracting, lowered the road 6 inches to better drain the surrounding properties, he said.
Last week, some motorists were driving around the barricades and using the road anyway. The road serving the Pinedale neighborhood runs between Alexander and Hunter streets.
