TAMPA – Baseball legend Lou Piniella will serve as honorary manager for the Tampa Bay Walk to Defeat ALS on Saturday, March 8, at the University of South Florida.

Piniella’s wife, Anita, lost her father, Frank Garcia, to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“My father-in-law raised a family and built many memories in the Tampa Bay area, but he ultimately lost his life to ALS. It is up to us to continue this fight,” Piniella said. “As a Tampa native, I need your help to make a difference by combating a disease that is so closely tied to our community.”

The Tampa Bay Walk to Defeat ALS is sponsored by Skanska and the Clearwater Threshers. Walkers can sign up here. The walk begins at 11 a.m.

ALS progressively paralyzes its victims, attacking nerve cells and pathways in the brain or spinal cord. ALS has no known cause or cure.

Patients, some in wheelchairs, along with their families and friends, will make the two-mile trek.

The ALS Association Florida Chapter offers care to patients living in Florida and funds research to find the cause and cure.
