The iconic battle cross statue has been placed at the site of the Iraq Veterans Memorial in Veterans Memorial Park, the first phase of a project to remember the military men and women who fought in that war.
Cadstruct is the general contractor building the first phase of the Iraq Veterans Memorial. The Betz Art Foundry in Houston, sculpted the battle cross statue, which received funding from Champion Foundation Repair, the VFW Post 8108 Riverview Memorial & Men/Women Auxiliaries, AMVETS Post 44 in Brandon, the Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon, the American Legion Auxiliary West Tampa Memorial Post 248, L3 Services, Stratis Division and Silverback 7.
The Iraq memorial will be the second of 12 theaters of war planned for the Veterans Memorial Park. Hillsborough County is funding road work and other improvements at the park as the memorials go up. The Vietnam memorial was dedicated in 2011.
More funding – about $50,000 -- is needed to complete the Iraq project, said Mark Goujon, an Iraq war veteran leading the fundraising effort.
