The Associated Press article in the June 8 Tribune, “Air Force taps woman to fight sex abuse,” is complete with one exception: Gen. Woodward was formerly the Wing Commander at MacDill Air Force Base.
It’s noteworthy how many of our senior military leadership pass through the hallowed halls of Tampa’s U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). Generals Hugh Shelton and Martin Dempsey went on to become chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. David Petraeus and John Allen oversaw our nation’s military activities in Afghanistan, with Petraeus going on to become director of the CIA.
My friend Maggie Woodward, a colonel during her tenure in Tampa, is now a major general, and if I were a betting man I would wager she is destined for greatness. I would not be surprised if one day she wore the four-star insignia, and who knows, becomes our first female chairman — make that chairwoman — of the Joint Chiefs.
