Regarding “We need a new Constitution” (Your Views, July 1): So Alan Jude Murley wants to change the Constitution into a constitutional democracy. Murley, being a lawyer and having taken the oath, is admirable. However, since we are a republic, “We the People” elect officials to represent us. To have lawyers, as he puts it, bang out a Constitution in a year, leaving the people out of the process, is unacceptable.
The Constitution has stood the test of time. To state it is a beautiful artifact under green glass that is causing a continuing problem because of the complexity of boring opinions is way off base. The constitutional democracy that Murley wants to create is totally opposite of what our forefathers intended.
The Constitution is our blueprint to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and should be left alone. “We the People” have the right through our votes to make the necessary changes.
