Last week I read many nice words regarding Bill Poe on the occasion of his death. These words served as tribute to his long career as a gentlemen, philanthropist, public servant and true champion of our community.
These remarks by leaders in our community made me recall that it was Bill Poe, while he was mayor of Tampa, who pioneered the development of Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park. This park, on the west bank of the Hillsborough River, is now the focus of a redevelopment effort championed by our mayor, Bob Buckhorn.
It was such a thoughtful letter that I have saved it for all of these years.
On Tuesday we had a meeting at Blake High School to discuss the redesign of the park — and to see how Mayor Buckhorn plans to further the vision of Bill Poe regarding this wonderful park on the Hillsborough River.
