Medical supplies leave Tampa bound for Syria war refugees

Published:

A shipping container full of medical supplies is headed to Syria, thanks to donations of money and materials.

The 40-foot-long container holds about 8,500 pounds of supplies, said Josh Miller, executive director of the Tampa office of Advocates for World Health, a nonprofit organization donating medical supplies around the world.

The shipment, arranged in conjunction with the Syrian American Medical Society, should reach Turkey in about a month. From there, groups will take the supplies to refugee camps and to the field where people are getting injured, Miller said.

The container, scheduled to be shipped Tuesday night, contains more than 10 pallets of medical supplies, worth more than $100,000 including gauze, respiratory and intravenous supplies, equipment for basic wound care, dialysis machines, stretchers, hospital beds and other supplies donated from clinics and hospitals in Tampa, elsewhere in Florida and across the country, Miller said.
