TAMPA -

A local lawyer will give away 1,000 turkeys this morning.

Lou Pendas plans to give away one turkey per family from 8 to 10 a.m. at his law office at 816 W. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

People were already in line before 5 a.m.

Anyone who wants a turkey can get one, and people don't need to prove they are struggling financially. But Pendas is hoping people follow the honor system.

"We are going to assume that if they're here, they are really in need of a free turkey," Pendas said. "We are hoping that people that can go out to Publix and buy a turkey will not be in this line."

When Pendas gave away turkeys last year at his main office in Orlando, people started lining up by 4 a.m., and the line stretched for a half-mile, he said. He'll give away 1,000 turkeys at his Orlando office, at 625 E. Colonial Drive, on Tuesday.

Pendas has hired police officers to provide crowd control. A nearby church and software company will make parking spaces available.

"This is my way of giving back to the community," said Pendas, who opened his Tampa office in January. "We want people that need these turkeys to actually receive them and walk away happy."
