What Is NIE?
It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." - Albert Einstein
News In Education (NIE) is a cooperative effort between schools and The Tampa Tribune to promote the use of newspapers as an educational resource. As part of our commitment to improving education, NIE, in partnership with WFLA-TV News Channel 8 and TBO.com, has expanded to reflect a multi-media strategy. The NIE team has been working closely with WFLA-TV and TBO.com to develop curriculum activities that will enhance students’ and teachers’ educational experiences.
NIE provides schools with class sets of The Tampa Tribune, plus our award-winning study guides, at no cost to teachers or schools. Due to shrinking school budgets, newspapers have become an invaluable tool to teachers. The Tampa Tribune absorbs all production costs and half the cost of newspapers; the other half of the newspaper cost is paid for through the sponsorships of generous community-minded companies, government agencies, foundations and individuals.
The Tampa Tribune and our NIE curriculum are rich educational tools, offering teachers an up-to-the-minute, living text and source for countless projects in virtually every content area. Through the generosity of our sponsors, we can deliver Tampa's newspaper and quality curriculum to thousands of eager and deserving students and grateful teachers.
With training and a variety of curriculum resources, teachers make The Tampa Tribune a living textbook that features current, real-world information. Using the newspaper and NIE curriculum on a regular basis helps students develop daily reading habits that they will carry through their lives. These newspapers provide a vital link to the real world for students who too often do not realize the value of their academic programs. The study of today's critical issues, events and people helps pupils understand the past and see a role for themselves in their future world. Student interests, from sports to entertainment, become the arena for practicing basic enrichment skills and understanding concepts as students use statistics and other data to compute, invest and comparison-shop.
“The goal of the NIE program is to create a generation of critical readers and asking them to examine different writing styles within the newspaper is a great way to help them develop critical reading skills,” says Jim Abbott, manager of educational programs at the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) Foundation. “Knowing the difference between persuasive writing, such as advertisements and editorials and reporting helps students understand what is being read and what the writer is trying to achieve.”
Governor Jeb Bush believes that “reading is the most powerful skill a child can learn, as it influences success in school and improves the overall quality of life.”
Reading every day is imperative for children. Reading increases vocabulary, writing skills and knowledge of the world around us. What better way to increase knowledge about the world than by reading newspapers?
Students in schools with NIE programs did 10 percent better than students in schools that had no NIE program, according to a study conducted for the NAA Foundation. According to NAA, The empirical study found that NIE programs can make a large difference in the quality of student education.
The Tampa Tribune’s NIE program promotes the use of newspapers as an integral part of the academic program. Using the newspaper and NIE curricula on a regular basis helps students develop daily reading habits that they will carry through their lives. Our sponsors have the satisfaction of supporting literacy and analytical thinking skills, broadening students' horizons and helping to build the responsible citizens of tomorrow.
