Measuring Success

Using newspapers as a teaching tool in the classroom improves student performance on standardized tests, according to a study conducted by Dan Sullivan, a professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The study measures the impact of Newspaper In Education programs, which promote the use of newspapers as an educational resource and curriculum tool.

The study, "Measuring Success! The Positive Impact of Newspaper In Education Programs on Student Achievement,"* found that:
  • Students in schools with NIE programs did better on standardized reading tests than those in schools with no NIE programs.
  • Low-income, minority, and non-native English-speaking students benefit significantly from NIE programs.
  • Students at middle schools and high schools with a high concentration of those demographics (and that have significant NIE programs) scored higher than their counterparts at schools without such programs.

*This report is the second phase of a three-part project to determine the scope and impact of NIE programs on student performance and readership. The final phase will examine the relationship of NIE programs to future readership.
