H2O
A quick look at Florida might make a person think that there is a lot of water available. Water is everywhere the eye can see – sometimes. More than half of the wetlands have disappeared and water levels in many lakes continue to be depleted. Springs have stopped flowing into some rivers. Most water in the Hillsborough County area comes from wells drilled into the Floridan Aquifer. These wells are fed by rainwater. And, with rain in Tampa Bay being quite scarce, everyone needs to do his or her part and practice water conservation. Do one thing every day to conserve water...you can help the rain! This NIE curriculum was produced in partnership with the Hillsborough County Water Department.

Keeping Our Children and Schools Safe
Despite the extensive and horrifying media coverage and continued public concern over school shootings, research shows that students are still safer in school then they are in the real world. However, because we have traditionally assumed that children are protected in a school environment, any display of school violence is alarming. Oftentimes, parents find it difficult talking to their children about school violence. Parents may find themselves frustrated as to what they can do to prevent future incidents. It is important for parents to keep the communication lines open with their children regarding school and personal safety. Solutions to Litter and Pollution: You Can Do Your Part

It's Up To You 2004
Patriotism is a feeling of love and devotion to one's own homeland. Levels of patriotism in all nations have varied through history. Generally, any selfless act that directly benefits the nation is considered patriotic. Perhaps the most obvious example is the act of risking death in battle. However, many other less dramatic beneficial acts, such as showing support for U.S. troops by waving flags, also are considered patriotic. The two most significant words one can utter to declare his or her patriotism is "I Voted." Voting is a powerful way to express your support of your country and the ideal of democracy. People vote for a number of reasons. They vote to decide how their schools, cities, counties, states and the country should be governed, and by whom.
