The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is giving away free microchips to pet owners this weekend.

On Saturday, July 26 from noon to 4 p.m. or while supplies last, the SPCA will give away microchips to help lost pets find their way back home to the first 200 who show up at the free clinic.

The giveaway is taking place at SPCA Florida, 5850 Brannen Road S., Lakeland this weekend.

Microchips are tiny computer circuits, about the size of a grain of rice, that are injected under the skin between the shoulder blades of cats and dogs. Identifying information about the pet can be read by a special scanner to help place lost pets back with their owners.

The free microchips are limited to the first 200 dogs or cats. There are no income qualifications or limit on number of pets per owner.
