A man with an assault rifle was shot several times by deputies Friday night in Largo, Pinellas County sheriff's officials reported.

Anthony Gonzalez, 26, of Largo, was transported to the Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. No further information was available on his condition.

At around 8:30 p.m., deputies responded to a call that a man in a black sport utility vehicle was carrying an AR-15 style rifle on 119th Street North, south of Ulmerton Road

Deputies pulled the SUV over while it was traveling north on 119th Street North. Gonzalez exited the passenger side of the SUV and attempted to jump a nearby fence, deputies said.

The deputies – Steven Smith, 26 and Mark Douglas, 46 – shot Gonzalez multiple times while he was holding the rifle, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told WFLA.

Both Smith and Douglas have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure in cases where a suspect is shot, deputies said.

A sheriff's news release listed 60-year-old Pamela Gonzalez as the driver of the SUV. Deputies did not say if she would be charged with a crime.
