There are multiple ways Bay area residents can help in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts this weekend. Local businesses and nonprofit organizations are planning events today and in the weeks to come to collect donations. Private citizens also are dreaming up ways to raise money.

Also, SunTrust and United Way are collecting cash donations. Go to any SunTrust location in Florida to make a deposit in cash – or by check made out to “Hurricane Recovery Fund”.

If you're struggling to make contact with loved ones in the storm's path, the Red Cross can help.

Call 1-877-741-1444 to request a "Disaster welfare inquiry."

The Red Cross warns it could take days, even weeks, to receive an answer.

Another option is to call the Salvation Army at 1-800-SAL-ARMY or visit their website at http://www.salvationarmyusa.org.
