Review: Belly Bar Prenatal + DHA Chocolate Vitamins

Available at CVS, Target, Whole Foods and Vitamin World, online at bellybarproducts.com; $24.99 for the two pack with 30 Prenatal Multivitamin Chocolate Balls and 30 Vegetarian DHA Chocolate Balls

The Pitch: "Bellybar Chocolate Vitamin Balls are delicious, fortified bites of real chocolate and chewy soft nougat that make getting your prenatal vitamins a moment of pleasure."

The Skinny: Regular 4you readers know that I am looong past the baby-bump age. But I still remember those giant prenatal vitamins doctors prescribed (gulp) some 30 years ago (double gulp). So I was pleased to see that already-nauseous new moms don't have to get those suckers down every day anymore. Pleased? OK, I was downright envious.

Because we didn't have any pregnant testers available here at the Trib, I decided to give the supplements a try, and they are yummy – especially the DHA supplements, which are a soft and chewy dark chocolate with a touch of raspberry. It was tempting to gobble them up in one sitting. There's even a little warning on the box: "These chocolates are delicious, but please consume as a supplement." (Darn it.)

I've been reading a lot about DHA lately, an omega-3 fatty acid that experts say newborn babies use for brain, nerve and eye tissue development. But any adult who isn't eating enough fish might want to add this supplement to his or her diet. It's good for aging brains, as well.

The Bellybar prenatal supplement has lots of vitamins, but not much calcium, so pregnant moms will want to get that somewhere else.

Bottom line: You probably can get all the same vitamins from a healthy diet or a variety of supplements, but these two Bellybar supplements combined will cover most of your bases – and they're easier to swallow than most.
