We Tried It: Silk’n DermBeaute Skin Cleansing and Clarifying System

Published:

$79 suggested retail price; currently $49 at www.silkn.com

The pitch: “Essential to clean, exfoliate and revive your skin.”

The skinny: If you’re just looking for a good battery-powered skin-cleansing brush, you can find one for $20 to $35 at Target or Walgreens. Our PrimeTime Beauty Board reviewed them in 2013, and I loved how soft and clean the Olay Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System made my skin feel.

But if you’re looking for a system that will do a little more — clean, exfoliate, even massage your face — the Silk’n DermBeaute is worth considering.

The DermBeaute system comes with five heads, each designed to do something different for your skin.

There are two deep-cleansing brushes; one for normal skin and one that is extra-soft for delicate and ultra-sensitive skin. (I used the latter a couple of weeks after getting a peel at the dermatologist’s office, and it is very gentle).

There’s a soft latex surface massage head that’s designed to enhance the application and absorption of cosmetics.

There’s a medium-hard bristle brush that’s meant to remove superficial dead cells and help stimulate regeneration.

And there’s a soft “micro-fingers” head for a facial massage. (I thought I would NEVER use this one, but it actually is quite nice.)

Every attachment has a job to do, and each one does it well. You’ll feel as though you’ve gone in for a spoiling spa treatment.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a great place to put those attachments when you aren’t using them. The base of the brush comes with a sturdy stand that keeps it and one attached head nice and handy on my bathroom vanity. But the other heads must be stored in a drawer, where I worry they’ll remain damp longer than they should — or, worse, be forgotten altogether.

That’s my only complaint, though, about this otherwise well-designed and well-made product. It’s water-resistant, so you can take it in the shower. And it runs on two AA batteries that can be easily replaced.

It’s a breeze to use and to clean, and at the sale price of $49, it doesn’t cost much more than more basic systems. Still on the fence?: If purchased online at silkn.com, it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
